10 Ways to Love Your Baby from Earth to Heaven

Since losing Mason, one of my daily struggles has been figuring out how to love him well.
How are you supposed to love a baby you can't see, hold, comfort, or nurture?
At times, it can feel impossible. And if I'm honest, it can also feel frustrating that we even have to think about alternative ways to love our babies.
It should be simple.
Feed them.
Comfort them.
Care for them.
But for us, it isn't.
Instead, we have to lean into our God-given instincts, our love for our babies, and our relationship with the Lord as we learn what motherhood looks like after loss.
We also have to give ourselves permission to keep it simple.
Our babies are perfectly loved where they are. They aren't watching to see whether we honored them in the "right" way. They aren't keeping score of how many times we say their name or how many hours we spend thinking about them.
They are fully known, fully seen, and fully cared for by the One who loves them even more than we do.
So as you read these ideas, remember that there is no expectation here.
These aren't a checklist for being a "good" mom.
They are simply invitations—small ways to give your love somewhere to go when it feels like your arms are empty.
Below are ten ideas for honoring and mothering your baby from earth to Heaven. Some are things I've done personally, while others I've gathered from fellow loss parents whose ideas have encouraged me.
If you have other meaningful ways you honor your baby, I'd love to hear them. Like you, I'm always looking for new ways to remember and celebrate Mason.
1. Plant a Tree
We planted a beautiful Rose of Sharon tree for Mason that blooms blue flowers. Every time I water it, tend to it, or watch it bloom, I feel a little closer to him. I even decorate around it for different seasons and holidays, much like I would have decorated his nursery if he were here.
2. Write Letters
In the days after losing Mason, I wrote him countless letters.
Putting my thoughts on paper became one of the safest places for my grief to land. Try writing everything you wish you could tell your baby. Whether it's about your day, your hopes, or simply how much you miss them, it can be a beautiful way to express your love.
3. Create a Memory Box
Gather the keepsakes that matter most to you—a positive pregnancy test, ultrasound photos, hospital bracelets, tiny hats, footprints, or hand molds—and place them in a special box.
On difficult days, opening that box can become a tangible reminder that your baby's life matters.
4. Light a Candle
We have a candle with Mason's name on it that we light whenever our family gathers.
It's a simple tradition, but it reminds us that Mason still has a place in our family. He is remembered, included, and deeply loved.
5. Donate in Their Honor
Supporting a ministry, charity, hospital, or organization in your baby's name is a beautiful way to let their life continue impacting others.
Love multiplied is never wasted.
6. Wear Memorial Jewelry
A necklace, bracelet, ring, or other keepsake can become a quiet reminder that your baby is always close to your heart.
Some families choose engraved jewelry, fingerprint jewelry, cremation jewelry, or lockets with tiny photos inside.
7. Celebrate Birthdays and Milestones
Just because your baby isn't physically here doesn't mean their life isn't worth celebrating.
We haven't reached Mason's first birthday yet, but I already know we'll celebrate it.
For now, we honor him every month on the 19th. Our family wears Mason Blue, remembers him together, and marks another month of loving him.
Those simple traditions have become some of my favorite ways to mother him.
8. Make a Photo Book or Memory Journal
If you have photographs, gather them into a printed album.
If you don't, create a journal filled with ultrasound pictures, meaningful Bible verses, letters, dried flowers, artwork, and anything else that reminds you of your baby.
Your story deserves to be preserved.
9. Create a Remembrance Garden
Whether it's an entire garden or simply a single flower pot on your porch, create a space that reminds you of your baby.
Being surrounded by God's creation often reminds me that even in seasons of loss, He continues bringing beauty from broken places.
10. Speak Their Name
Perhaps the simplest way we can continue mothering our babies is by speaking their names.
Say their name in conversation.
Pray their name aloud.
Include them in your family's story.
Order your coffee under their name if hearing it spoken brings you comfort.
Speak it often.
Their name matters because they matter.
Friend, however you choose to honor and mother your baby, it counts.
There is no perfect way to love a child in Heaven.
Only your way.
The way that reflects your relationship with your baby and the unique story God has written for your family.
Your love still reaches them.
Your motherhood is still real.
And nothing—not even death—can separate you from being their mom.
